Your Guide to Six Row's 2012 American Craft Beer Week

American Craft Beer Week is approaching fast and we've got a full slate of great stuff planned.  It would be a shame if you had to miss any of it, so get your calendars out and start saving the dates!  All events begin at 5pm unless otherwise noted.

Monday, May 14
Small Batch Release of Fresh Strawberry Honey Weizen

Our Honey Weizen is an easy-drinking wheat beer made with a generous portion of honey from Missouri Honey in Florissant, Missouri! With a combination of white wheat malt, honey malt, and locally produced honey, the unfiltered Honey Weizen is a great example of a traditional wheat beer with a twist. It was delicious on its own, and now we've added fresh strawberries.

Tuesday, May 15
Cask of Peppercorn DIPA

The Peppercorn DIPA lost our Cask Beer Election by one measly vote back in March. It ran such a strong campaign, we had to reward it with a spot during American Craft Beer Week.

Wednesday, May 16
Cask of Liquorice Porter

You've tried our Porter flavored with Vanilla, Bacon, and Whiskey.  Now we have aged a cask with liquorice root to tantalize your taste buds.

Thursday, May 17
Large Batch Release of Bailene & Beer Pairing Special

The Bailene is our signature Whale style fermented with French Saison yeast. We released a small batch of Bailene last year that went over really well, so it is back and there is more for everyone!

We are still solidifying the menu for the Beer Pairing Special, but it will include a sample of four beers: Plant No. 1 Pilsner, Centennial Rye, Bailene, and Killer Whale. Instead of a formal dinner with a specific start time, it will be a special you can order off the menu while supplies last. It will be a more informal tapas style with all the courses coming out at once to be paired with the beers. We will post the menu and pricing as soon as those details are solidified.

Friday, May 18
Cask of Fresh Ginger Centennial Rye

Our Ginger Kolsch went over so well, we decided to similarly spruce up our Centennial Rye using fresh ginger.

--- UPDATE ---
Due to some unforeseen scheduling issues, Our Whale of a Time Festival has been postponed until a later date, which is still TBD.  Please watch for updates as we reschedule the date.

However, we still have lots planned for...

Saturday, May 19 (opening at 10am)
Cellar Saturday & Beer Brunch

After our very popular Anniversary Pancake Breakfast, we realize that beer for breakfast/brunch is a good thing. The brunch menu includes:

  • Beer Batter Buttermilk Pancakes (PANCAKES!!!)
  • Whale Rarebit over English Muffins
  • Beer Biscuits & Gravy

We'll open at 10am and serve our brunch items while supplies last.

Then all day long we'll be bringing out some special holdovers from our reserves and serving them for $3 a pint until we run out. At any given time, we'll have four of our special styles on tap in addition to our normal lineup. Including, but not limited to:

  • Vanilla Porter
  • Export Stout
  • Kolsch
  • Belgian Double IPA
  • And special surprises!!!
It should be a great capper to a great American Craft Beer Week. Hope to see you all there! Cheers!

Happy Birthday To Us

Six Row Brewing Company is turning 2 years old, and like most 2-year-olds, we want to have a big party with all our friends, lots of yummy treats and cake.

Unlike most 2-years-olds, we actually like sharing our cool stuff (and we're a little less whiny). We are so excited to turn the corner into the terrible twos, that we'd like to invite one and all to join us for a two-day blowout at our Plant No.1 Brewpub at 3690 Forest Park Ave. in St. Louis on Friday and Saturday, December 2nd and 3rd.

The party will feature several casks, small batches of unique beer, the return of some beer styles we've tapped throughout the year, our new anniversary beer, and live music. Oh, and pancakes, because what 2-year-old doesn't love pancakes?

Note that there will be several hours on Friday night when you'll be able to go home, get some sleep, shower, shave, check in with your parole officer, walk the dog, etc., otherwise, you should pretty much plan on being around for all of this 2-day SixRowapalooza so as not to miss a minute of the fun, not to mention the beer.

We should begin by mentioning that all weekend our eight regular taps will be pouring:
- Whale
- Honey Weizen
- Porter
- Double IPA
- Vanilla Porter
- Brown Ale
- Fresh Hop Extra Pale Ale
- Plant No. 1 Pre-Prohibition Pilsner (it's back!)

The super, special, happy fun stuff starts Friday Dec. 2nd at 5PM. Punch the clock, cash your paycheck and head straight to Six Row.

At 5:00 we'll be tapping...

  • Our new 2nd Anniversary Beer, Killer Whale. It's Whale (our flagship wheat-pale ale hybrid) with a whole bunch more teeth. We'll be pouring it all weekend, and into the holiday season.
  • The first of two Baumann's Bacon Porter Casks. Yeah, that's right, more pig in the Porter. Once again Baumann's Fine Meats in Brentwood has hooked us up solid, and this time we've got a total of two pounds of three different types of lean, custom-smoked bacon soaking in a cask of our Porter. If you like your Porter salty and smoky, or (maybe more to the point) if you like your bacon saturated with beer, have a pint and squeal with delight.
  • Reserved kegs of our Centennial Rye and Black IPA styles. These are the last of these beers this year. We'll tap 'em and let 'em flow all weekend until they run out.

Then at 7PM on Friday, The Bob & Perry Review and the Original Mojos will perform several hours of fun, live classic rock. The last time they played here, there was a group hallucination of a seven-foot dancing Whale.

At midnight on Friday Six Row closes for the evening. Get some rest, and we'll see you Saturday morning, because...

We're opening at 10AM on Saturday, December 3rd for brunch. Start your day off right: in a bar. In addition to some great breakfast dishes from our kitchen (did we mention the pancakes?), when we open we'll be tapping and serving...

  • A cask of Chocolate Milk Breakfast Porter - our Porter with serious amounts of cocoa and lactose added, for a rich, sumptuous accompaniment to eggs, sausage, and pancakes.
  • The last 6th barrel of our Cream Ale. Yes, it's for breakfast. You may doubt, but try it out. Goes good with... well... pancakes.

The fun rolls on at 3PM on Saturday when we'll be tapping...

  • The second cask of Baumann's Bacon Porter. Two pounds of Baumann's custom smoked bacon in this piggy too. Squeal in delight a second time.
  • A small batch of Belgian Double IPA. We fermented a 6th-barrel's worth of our popular Double IPA with Belgian Trappist yeast. Yum.

Are we done yet? Not remotely.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" -
but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never assume Six Row is done celebrating when their birthday rolls around!" Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Where was I? Right... more beer tappings. On Saturday at 7PM we'll be tapping...
  • A cask of our new Brown Ale, dry-hopped with rich, earthy Summit hops.
  • A small batch of Imperial Milk Stout. We've got just 5 gallons of this really big, really sweet, really rich milk stout, which will taste just dandy with dish of gooey butter cake (at this point we probably won't be serving pancakes any more, but then again, you never know).
Of course, with this being a birthday party and all, at some point in the afternoon/evening, there will be cake. We're two years old and we want cake. (If we are not too full of pancakes.)B

Alas, all good things must come to an end, and our good thing ends midnight on Saturday. But don't forget to stop in for lunch on Monday, December 5, our actual birthday...

The Return of Bacon Porter

We have been having a great week at Six Row for St. Louis Craft Beer Week. We are thrilled to see the demand for local craft beer continuing to grow in St. Louis and we are proud to be a part of that.

We are capping off the week with a return of one of our favorite cask beers, the Bacon Porter. Back in June, we got a slab of bacon from our friends at Baumann's Fine Meats and the result was full of bacon-y goodness. It was so good that we thought it would be a great way to finish off Craft Beer Week in style.

So come on down as we tap the cask at 1pm.

We'll be giving away a specially designed Bacon Porter t-shirt today for our Hashtag of the Day contest for the winning tweet including the tag #BaconPorter.

Good luck and thanks again for supporting Six Row and St. Louis craft beer!

Celebrating National IPA Day with Peppercorn DIPA Cask (and a free t-shirt)

Normally, hopheads can enjoy our Double IPA style whenever they pop into our Old Plant No. 1 Pub, but today is National IPA Day.  Plus it is the middle of St. Louis Craft Beer Week.  So we had to take it up a notch.

Tonight at 4pm, we'll be tapping a cask of peppercorn-infused Double IPA, which should provide a spicy and tasty celebration of the day.

Additionally our Hashtag of the Day contest rolls forward.  Yesterday, @rtodaizh took home the $20 gift certificate for his #ViennaLager tweet.

Today, we're going to give out another t-shirt, so get your Twitter on with the hashtag #PeppercornCask.

Good luck!

Your Guide to Six Row's St. Louis Craft Beer Week Events

If you follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook, chances are you already know about some of the exciting St. Louis Craft Beer Week events that we've been planning. But we wanted to put together a full list of our plans for your convenience.  We try to be helpful.

Saturday, July 30 - Release large batch of our Cream Ale style

You may remember this from such Craft Beer Weeks as American Craft Beer Week, when we released a small batch. Well, folks seemed to really enjoy it so we are going to kick off St. Louis Craft Beer Week in style by bringing it back. Plus, there is more of it. If you didn't have a chance to taste it before, come on down and give the Cream Ale a try:

Brewed in the same manner as an American Lager or a Kölsch, this ale style is light, dry, and perfect for hot summer weather. Our namesake “six row barley” is the primary influence in this brew, giving it the characteristic “grainy” aromas and light straw color. A long, cool, fermentation, followed by cold aging helps to create the clean, dry finish. A small amount of hops at the end of the boil lends slight herbal and grassy notes to finish off this perfect “lawnmower” beer.
(ABV: 4.70%, Bitterness Units: 17 IBUs, Color: 3.3 SRM, Original Gravity: 10.43 degrees Plato)
Monday, August 1 - Release small batch of Sour Mild style

Our head brewer, Evan, likes to describe the Sour Mild as a bit of a wild card. Imagine a traditional Mild Ale (which is kind of like a Brown Ale) that is a malty and mild "session" beer, but with some added sour and tart notes. We brewed it in the traditional manner with Fuggle hops, but with a sour twist.  We're not entirely sure how sour it will be yet, but we are sure it will be different and interesting.  We only did a small batch, so get it while it lasts.

Tuesday, August 2 - Black IPA Flight

The Black IPA is actually based off the beer we made for the Schlafly Fresh Hops Festival last year. We will be releasing a large batch in the Autumn, but Evan has been debating which hops work best. So we are going to let our customers help us decide.

He's brewed three versions: one with Gelena hops, one with Summit hops, and one with Nugget hops.  We'll serve all three in a flight and you can tell us which one you like best to help us decide which version will be available in the Fall. So come on in and make your choice known!

Wednesday, August 3 - Release small batch of Vienna Lager style

Akin to a German Oktoberfest/Marzen style, the Vienna Lager is a somewhat "unknown" Austrian amber lager style. It will have lots of nice toasted and biscuit-y notes to complement the clean and refreshing lager.  It should also have a hint of noble hop character from the Hallertauer Mittelfrüher hops that we used.

Thursday, August 4 - Cask tapping of Peppercorn DIPA

Our August cask tapping will feature our famous Double IPA infused with peppercorns for a unique take on our classic style.

Friday, August 5 - Release small batch of Belgian Trippel

Many people like the malty goodness of our Belgian Dubbel style, but the funny thing about Belgian Trippels is that it isn't just an intensified Dubbel as the name might suggest.  The Trippel will indeed have a higher ABV than the Dubbel, but it will be more yellow to gold colored and have a more spicy character than the darker malted Dubbel.

Saturday, August 6 - Cask tapping of Bacon Porter

We had such a great response to the Bacon infused Porter back in June that we got some more bacon from the good people at Baumann's and did it again to cap off St. Louis Craft Beer Week in style.

Craft Beer with Lime? Yep. Craft Beer with Lime

Ah, Summer -- baseball, barbecue, and beer...with lime in it. Yeah, that's right, we're not going to sweat the big boys for putting lime in their beer. We just don't think they should be the only kids in town doing it.

That's why we at Six Row Brewing are going to take a cask of our Centennial Rye - a fine, crisp, mildly tart summer beer in its own right - and add some lime peel to it, for an additional zesty kick.

Come on down to our brewpub at 3690 Forest Park Ave. on Thursday, July 7th, for a fresh, summery pint of Lime Rye, and join us in fond reveries of fireworks, float trips and fun. We'll tap the cask at 5:00 pm.

Your beer with lime no longer needs to come in a clear bottle.

Six Row To Go Whole Hog

Well... maybe not the whole hog, but a couple pounds of the belly, anyhow. Specifically, the cured and smoked part that most normal folks call bacon.

As most of the carnivorous world can attest, there are few good things that can't be made better by adding bacon, and we believe beer is no exception.

To prove that point, we're going to fill a sixth of a hogshead with our fine Robust Porter, cook up a small slab of bacon that Baumann's Fine Meats is preparing just for us, and poke a sack of that pig into the cask to soak for a spell.  We plan to tap it at 5PM on Thursday, June 2nd.

Come on down to Six Row (3690 Forest Park Ave.) that evening and it will be our pleasure to pull you a pint of Porked Porter, and maybe engage you with a few awful puns.

We'll also be featuring some special bacon-centric food items in addition to the items on our new and improved menu that evening, so all in all it should be a strange, slightly smoky, and most definitely un-kosher good time.

Six Row Birthday Bash

It is hard to believe that almost a year has gone by in the life of Six Row Brewing Company. In December 2009, Six Row officially opened its doors and started serving up some great styles of beer including our own signature style, the Whale (wheat-pale ale hybrid).

Over the past year, we have thoroughly enjoyed serving our customers some exceptional beers and doing our best to provide a friendly, relaxing atmosphere for them to imbibe all of the great styles that Evan and Jason have brewed.

To celebrate our first year and to thank our customers for the tremendous support they have shown us, we will be having a birthday party for ourselves on Saturday, December 4th, featuring:

  • Drink deals
  • Food deals
  • Special cask tapping
  • Commemorative glasses
  • Special Musical Guests: Less Cowbell (AKA More Cowbell going acoustic)
  • Free birthday cake (while it lasts)

More details to follow, but mark your calendars to help us celebrate Six Row's birthday!
